Filming a Suicide Mission: The Extraordinary Waal River Crossing

Yesterday was an incredible day spent along the banks of the Waal River in Nijmegen, working with Tim Gray and his fantastic documentary crew of the World War II Foundation. It’s not every day that I’m asked to participate in a documentary so this was very exciting. We’re filming a new documentary, which will be narrated by Paul Giamatti. It is about on one of the most daring actions of World War II: the heroic crossing of the Waal River in canvas boats, in broad daylight under severe German fire by the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Market Garden.

This action, famously depicted in the movie “A Bridge Too Far,” is truly one of history’s great moments of courage, resilience, and sheer determination. Being the on-camera historian for this shoot was a privilege—sharing insights and context for a story the Germans themselves called “a suicide mission.”

Special thanks to the skilled team from Kiwi Drone for capturing stunning aerial shots that bring the battlefield to life in a whole new way. We’ll be back filming again in The Netherlands this July, diving even deeper into this remarkable chapter of World War II.

Stay tuned—this documentary is going to be extraordinary!

What began with guiding in the Operation Market Garden area has since expanded to include the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge and more.
