Beringen Bridgehead Memorial

The Guards Armoured Division’s fight across the Belgian canals

On 6 September 1944, the Guards Armoured Division attacked across the Albert Canal at Beringen. They expected a quick advance to the Dutch border. What they got was four days of bitter fighting against a German defence that was far stronger than anyone had anticipated. Jagdpanthers, Sturmgeschütz assault guns, and determined infantry turned every village into a battle. By the time the Guards finally seized a bridge across the Meuse-Escaut Canal at Neerpelt, the cost in men and machines had been severe, and the assumption that the Germans in Belgium were a beaten force had been shattered.

This full-day tour follows the Guards Armoured Division’s main line of advance from the Albert Canal to the Meuse-Escaut Canal. You will stand at the Beringen bridgehead, walk the streets of villages where the Coldstream Guards and Irish Guards fought house by house, and visit the spot where the Duke of Hartington, heir to the Devonshire dukedom and brother-in-law to John F. Kennedy, was killed by a sniper. This is the story of what it took to reach the start line for Operation Market Garden.

This tour is a natural companion to my XXX Corps Breakout tour, which picks up the story from Joe’s Bridge and follows the Guards north to Eindhoven on 17 September. Together, the two tours cover the complete British ground story from the Albert Canal to the link-up with the 101st Airborne. If you are interested in the airborne side of the operation, see the Hell’s Highway tour (101st Airborne) or the Arnhem, A Bridge Too Far tour (1st Airborne).

Tour itinerary: Beringen to Neerpelt

Morning: the Albert Canal and the road to Leopoldsburg

Beringen bridgehead
We begin where the Guards Armoured Division began: at the Albert Canal crossing at Beringen. Belgian resistance fighters had prevented the Germans from destroying the bridge, and the Guards seized the opportunity to establish a bridgehead on the far side. But the Germans counter-attacked fiercely. We will stand at the canal, look at the ground, and talk about how precarious this first toehold really was.

Beringen-Mijn and Beverlo
From the bridgehead, the Coldstream Guards had to fight their way through the mining village of Beringen-Mijn and on towards Beverlo. This was not open country. The terrain channelled the advance into narrow corridors where German armour, including Jagdpanthers and Sturmgeschütze, could hit the British tanks at close range. We visit the key positions and talk about what it was like to advance into this kind of opposition.

Heppen and the death of the Duke of Hartington
The village of Heppen was taken in a costly infantry attack. It was here that Major Andrew Cavendish, Marquess of Hartington, was killed by a German sniper. Hartington was the eldest son of the Duke of Devonshire and had married Kathleen Kennedy, sister of the future president, only four months earlier. His death at 26 sent shockwaves through the British aristocracy and the Kennedy family. We visit the location and I will tell you his story, one of those moments where the war in a small Belgian village connects to a much larger world.

Midday: Leopoldsburg

Leopoldsburg CWGC

Leopoldsburg CWGC Cemetery
We visit the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Leopoldsburg, where many of the men killed in the canal fighting and the subsequent Market Garden operations are buried. This is a moment to reflect on the cost of the advance.

Lunch and the Liberation Garden museum
We stop for lunch in Leopoldsburg (not included in the tour price), and visit the Liberation Garden museum. This modern museum tells the story of the liberation of the Leopoldsburg area in 1944. It is well worth the visit. Museum entrance is not included in the tour price.

Afternoon: Hechtel and Joe’s Bridge

Hechtel
Hechtel was the hardest fight on the road north. It took five days of heavy combat before the village finally fell to the British, and when it did, Hechtel was utterly destroyed. We visit the key locations in and around the village, including the Sherman tank memorial, and talk about why this battle mattered: the units that fought here were the same units that would lead the Market Garden breakout days later. Their condition after Hechtel shaped what happened next.

Joe’s Bridge at Neerpelt
We end the tour at Neerpelt, at the bridge across the Meuse-Escaut Canal that became known as Joe’s Bridge. It was named after Lieutenant Colonel J.O.E. Vandeleur of the Irish Guards, whose men seized it in a daring assault. The Germans counter-attacked repeatedly, but the bridge held. This crossing gave XXX Corps its start line for Operation Market Garden. Standing here, you can see the road stretching north towards the Dutch border, the road that the entire operation would depend on.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tour suitable for non-enthusiasts?

Yes. The canal fighting is a dramatic story with a clear narrative arc: a confident advance that runs into unexpected resistance, escalating battles, and a race against time. You do not need any military history background to follow it. I regularly take couples and families where one person is the enthusiast and the others came along for the experience. I focus on human stories and the landscape, not military jargon, and I adjust the level of detail to my audience.

How physically demanding is the tour?

Not demanding. This is primarily a driving tour with short walks at each stop, typically 10 to 20 minutes of walking per location. Some sites involve grass, cobbled streets, or unpaved paths. Comfortable shoes are a good idea. If you have specific mobility concerns, let me know in advance and I will adjust the route.

Where does the tour start and end? How do I get back?

The tour starts and ends at your chosen railway station: either Eindhoven or Leopoldsburg. We meet at 09:00 and return at approximately 17:00. If you need accommodation recommendations near either station, let me know after booking.

This tour goes into Belgium. Do I need to bring my passport?

If you are an EU/EEA citizen, no. There are no border checks between the Netherlands and Belgium. If you are travelling from outside the EU, you should carry your passport with you as a matter of course, but there are no border controls on this route.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. If there is a specific location, unit, or story you want to include, let me know when you book and I will adjust the route. I also offer fully bespoke tours. See my Groups page or contact me to discuss.

What is the difference between this tour and the XXX Corps Breakout tour?

This tour covers the fighting in Belgium in the days before Operation Market Garden: the crossing of the Albert Canal at Beringen, the battle for Hechtel, and the capture of Joe’s Bridge. The XXX Corps Breakout tour picks up from Joe’s Bridge on 17 September and follows the Guards north to Eindhoven. Together they tell the complete British ground story. If you can only do one, this tour gives you the Belgian fighting; the XXX Corps tour gives you the Market Garden breakout itself.

Do you offer this tour in languages other than English?

This tour is available in English and Dutch.

What about lunch?

We take a lunch break in Leopoldsburg, roughly halfway through the day. Lunch is not included in the tour price. I will choose the restaurant based on availability on the day.

How far in advance should I book?

I am often fully booked during peak season (April–September), especially around commemoration dates in September. I would recommend booking as early as possible. You can check my availability in the date picker below, or contact me to book for 2027.

What if it rains?

The tour runs in all weather conditions. The weather in this part of Belgium can be unpredictable, so bring a waterproof layer. Much of the tour is by car, so you will not be exposed for long stretches.

Is the Liberation Garden museum included?

The museum visit is part of the tour itinerary, but the entrance fee is not included in the tour price. You pay it on arrival.
