The Heroic Sacrifice of A C-47 Pilot

The Heroic Sacrifice of A C-47 Pilot

This is the story about 2nd Lt. Herbert Shulman, a pilot flying a C-47 Dakota filled with paratroopers for Operation Market Garden.

His C-47 is hit by anti-aircraft fire, but he chooses not to save himself, he puts the mission first and drops the stick of paratroopers on the Dropzone. Unfortunately, he is now unable to save himself, and he is killed in the crash landing of his plane.

At the Cemetery in Erp the propeller of his C-47 has been preserved as a monument, and in this video, we are going to visit the drop zone, crash site, and the monument.

As a local who has lived in the Operation Market Garden area for most of my life, this battle is now part of my DNA, and I have been studying it for almost 30 years. Since 2012 I have been active as a Battlefield Guide and over the years I’ve have taken many individuals, small and large groups, relatives of veterans, school groups, and military groups and staff rides on tours all through Europe. What began with guiding in the Operation Market Garden area has since expanded to include the Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge and more.
