Arnhem – Highlights (4 Hours) – Battlefield Tour

In this half day (4 hour) battlefield tour, we will visit the most important locations of the battle for Arnhem and Oosterbeek during Operation Market Garden.

This tour will start at the landing zones for an introduction and overview. Then we will follow the men of the Recce Squadron and their ill-fated mission to capture the bridge with their Jeeps, this includes a stop at the tunnel under the railway embankment near Wolfheze.

Our next stop will be the Westerbouwing heights, a hill overlooking and dominating the Rhine River. The loss of this hill and nearby ferry site made reinforcing the defensive perimeter almost impossible which lead to the eventual evacuation and the end of the operation. That will be discussed at our next stop, the Church near the Rhine.

We will then pay our respects at the Oosterbeek war cemetery where we will walk among the graves and remember their sacrifice.

Our final stop of the day is at the John Frost road bridge in Arnhem where we will discuss the heroic defense and famous last stand of the 2nd Battalion. This small force held on to the bridge for three days and four nights.

Usually starts at 13:00h / 1pm but can also start at 09:00h.

Transportation is included.
Coffee, tea, lunch and museum entrance is not included in the price.

By Joris

My name is Joris Nieuwint and I will be your tour guide! Please allow me to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about what I've been doing over the past years. For the past 10 years I've been living in Veghel, and before that, I've lived in Arnhem for almost two decades. Living so close to the battlefields meant that Operation Market Garden always had my interest and I've been studying the battles for all those years. Sharing what I've learned over the years has been my passion and becoming a tour guide was one of my dreams. Keeping the sacrifices of these men alive by telling their stories and showing the locations where it happened is my greatest passion.
